Overcoming bell-shaped

dose-response

Cannabis has been used for centuries to treat pain and inflammation, but only in recent years has a concerted scientific effort been carried out to understand how and why plant based medicine is an effective alternative to commercial drugs. With the proliferation of opioid drugs in America sparking a national health crisis, now seems a essential time to examine and understand the healing properties of cannabis. In this 2015 study led by Professor Ruth Gallily, researchers used Tikun Olam’s Avidekel strain to test the efficacy of CBD as an anti-inflammatory, anti-nociceptive (pain reducing) treatment option. More specifically, they aimed to overcome the bell-shaped dose-response curve that previous studies observed when using purified forms of CBD in treatment. This means that the healing properties of CBD were only experienced in a very limited dose range; an increase in dosage lead to a decrease in effectiveness after a certain point. Gallily and her team hypothesized that a plant-based extract would be more effective than purified CBD, as it contains a combination of cannabinoids (the various chemicals present in cannabis) that synergize with CBD to generate a more efficacious result. This phenomenon is called the “Entourage Effect,” theorized by Israeli doctor and mentor to Tikun Olam’s founder Tzachi Cohen, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam.

Other drugs derived from cannabis— such as Sativex for MS patients, and Marinol and Cesamet for cancer patients— have proved effective palliative treatments, with the downside being they produce a psychoactive effect due to the presence of THC. CBD, on the other hand, provides powerful anti-inflammatory, and anxiety-reducing effects while leaving the user clear-headed. For this reason, it’s important to expand our understanding of CBD and how best to administer it so a wider dosage range is available to people hoping to enjoy its benefits. Our Avidekel strain is rich in CBD and contains almost no THC, making it an ideal candidate for use in this study.

In this study, researchers compared purified CBD to Avidekel extract on a test population of mice, observing how both treatments affected pain level, swelling, and TNF? production (a cytokine responsible for initiation and amplification of the inflammatory process) over a period of 24 hours at different dosages. They found that under similar conditions, those treated with the purified CBD demonstrated a bell-shaped curve response, while those treated with the Avidekel extract experienced a decrease in symptoms as the dosage increased. This confirmed that plant-based CBD extracts can overcome the bell-shaped dose-response curve, and that Avidekel was more efficient for alleviating pain and inflammation than isolated CBD. Under the same conditions, scientists compared these CBD products to Tramadol (a commercial opiate) and Aspirin and found Avidekel extract to provide superior anti-inflammatory benefits.
These results are extremely encouraging as they indicate that plant based CBD extracts, Avidekel in particular, could be used to treat other pathological conditions. They also confirm that CBD based products are a suitable substitute for cannabis products that contain THC. This is good news for anyone interested in cannabis based treatments who might hesitate due to a misperception that they all produce a psychoactive effect. Our Avidekel strain can provide superior relief over increasing dosage levels when compared to isolated CBD, and is available today for anyone curious about experiencing its benefits.
